Summary

THE WORKING FLUID IN AN HERMETIC REFRIGERATING SYSTEM CAN BE SUBJECTED, BRIEFLY BUT REPEATEDLY, TO TEMPERATURES OF 433-623 K (160-250 DEG C) WHICH CAN, IN EXTREME CASES, REACH 973 K (700 DEG C). THESE HIGH TEMPERATURES CAN CAUSE DECOMPOSITION OF THE COMPRESSOR LUBRICATING OIL AND MOTOR BURN-OUT. EXPERIMENTS WERE THEREFORE CARRIED OUT TO DETERMINE THE DECOMPOSITION RATE OF REFRIGERANTS AND OILS MOST GENERALLY USED IN HERMETIC SYSTEMS AND SOME DIFFERENCES WERE FOUND IN THE HIGH TEMPERATURE STABILITY OF THREE HALOGENATED REFRIGERANTS MIXED WITH OIL.
