Summary
The Municipality of Brescia identified in the recovery and transformation of the “Former Colombaia Military Barracks", the opportunity to create a new building with a strong environmental sustainability. Originally the property, located near the historic center of the town, was the head quarter of the ancestor of the current Post Office: homing pigeons’ shelter in cages located under the roof, training and sorting through the most far and away destinations. The today challenge is the transformation of a building of the early '900, under the supervision of Government Department for Environment and Historical Buildings, in a completely new "nearly zero energy" environmental impact installation, definitely and only using natural materials and construction systems suitable for coming back to the nature and living closely and synergistically with. The building, of modest size, with a total area of 500 m2 divided over 3 floors, appears ideal for the construction of 9 apartments. The east-west orientation as well the large southern side, naturally suggested to create a "solar greenhouse" keeping the advantages of the solar gains both in winter and summer time to allow natural ventilation. The hardest job even the most technically advanced it is the real management of the solar greenhouse driven by an home automation system for collecting all relevant data. The complete structure, funded under the Regional Program of Lombardy Region "Contratto di Quartiere 2", will be classified as A class according to the Certification System of the Lombardy Region as well GOLD in compliance with the evaluation system of GBC HOME sustainability.
