Type of article: Periodical article
Summary
The UK Emissions Trading Scheme was launched on April 2, 2002 after more than two years of debate. The scheme is a key part of the UK Government's Climate Change Programme. It is also the world's first greenhouse gas emissions trading initiative to cover a broad range of sectors. Similar schemes are being introduced at EU level (from 2006 onwards), and global emissions trading under the Kyoto Protocol will start in 2008.
