Summary

THIS PAPER POINTS OUT THAT NOT ONLY ARE THE BRITISH STANDARDS COVERING REFRIGERATION PLANT INADEQUATE, BUT FEW MANUFACTURERS ATTEMPT TO DESIGN TO THEM. ANOTHER BONE OF CONTENTION IS THE LACK OF ANY RECOGNISED FORM OF SPECIFICATION OR TENDER SO THAT THE CAPACITY OF A PLANT MAY BE TAKEN AS QUITE DIFFERENT VALUES BY CLIENT AND SUPPLIER. NOT EVEN BODIES LIKE LLOYD'S LAY DOWN EXACT PARAMETERS, BUT LEAVE THE INTERPRETATION OF FACTORS SUCH AS DESIGN AMBIENT TEMPERATURE TO THE SUPPLIER. THE RESULT IS THAT, IN SPITE OF THE COST OF REFRIGERATION PLANT BEING A VERY SMALL FRACTION OF THE VALUE OF GOODS REFRIGERATED, MANY PLANTS ARE WORFULLY UNDERSIZED AND BADLY MAINTAINED. D.W.H.
