PREVIOUS ANALYSES OF THREE STAGE COOLERS HAVE NEGLECTED THE REAL GAS EQUATION OF STATE OF HELIUM. THOSE ANALYSES HAVE THEREFORE NEGLECTED THE COMPRESSIBILITY EFFECTS THAT OCCUR BELOW 20 K. THIS PAPER DERIVES THE THERMODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE OF THREE STAGE STIRLING TYPE COOLERS USING THE REAL GAS EQUATION OF STATE. AN ANALYSIS OF A SMALL, EFFICIENT THREE STAGE COOLER IS GIVEN WITH THE LOW TEMPERATURE GAS EFFECTS ILLUSTRATED.
