Theoretical evaluation of a new thermal system for tumour treatment.

Author(s) : SUN J., ZHANG A., BAI J.

Summary

A new model is built to theoretically evaluate the efficacy of the alternate cooling and heating treatment. The temperature field inside the tumor during the treatment and the damage degree after the treatment were investigated numerically. The simulation results demonstrate that the treatment region can be well defined and enlarged by the alternation of the RF heating and the LN2 cooling processes. Further analyses have revealed that more effective cellular damage at the tumor periphery can be induced through large thermal stress imposed by the rapid alternation of cooling and heating processes.
