Type of article: Article

Summary

THE EFFECTIVE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITIES OF SILICA AEROGEL FOAM FILLED WITH LIQUID H2, LIQUID D2 AND AN EQUIMOLAR MIXTURE OF LIQUID H2 -D2 WERE MEASURED NEAR 19.6 K. MEASURED VALUE OF 97 MILLIW/M.K FOR HYDROGEN FILLED FOAM IS ESSENTIALLY THE SAME AS FOR THE LIQUID ALONE. THIS RESULT AGREES WITH PREDICTIONS FOR THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF POROUS SYSTEMS WHICH GIVE A 2% ENHANCEMENT IN THE EFFECTIVE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY FOR THIS SYSTEM RELATIVE TO THE LIQUID ALONE.
