DEMANDS FOR INCREASING NUMBERS AND TYPES OF MINIATURE CRYOGENIC COOLERS OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS HAVE BEEN SPURRED BY SPACE MISSIONS AND BY THE NEED FOR RELIABLE HELIUM REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS FOR USE WITH A NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS UTILIZING SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNETS. THIS NEED FOR RELIABILITY HAS PROVIDED THE IMPETUS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF SEVERAL NEW LOW-TEMPERATURE COOLING DEVICES AND THE CONTINUED REFINEMENT OF VARIOUS COMPONENTS ASSOCIATED WITH SUCH DEVICES. SEVERAL OF THESE REFRIGERATION DEVELOPMENTS AND COMPONENT IMPROVEMENTS ARE HIGHLIGHTED. CONSIDERABLE STRIDES HAVE BEEN MADE, BUT MORE IMPROVEMENTS ARE NECESSARY BEFORE THE DESIRED RELIABILITY CAN BE ACHIEVED.
