THE ARTICLE IS MAINLY WRITTEN FOR THE END USER OF REFRIGERATING PLANTS. AFTER AN INTRODUCTION ABOUT THE IMPORTANCEOF INDIRECT COSTS OF A BREAKDOWN, SOME SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE ARE GIVEN. HOWEVER AS MAINTENANCE COSTS ARE STRONGLY INFLUENCED BY THE DESIGN OF THE INSTALLATION, THE ATTENTION IS DRAWN ON A MAINTENANCE EASY AND RELIABLE DESIGN. UNDER THE PRESSION OF COMPETITION AND DUE ALSO TO THE LACK OF RULES, FROM THIS POINT OF VIEW MANY TIMES UNACCEPTABLE SAVINGS ARE APPLIED IN THE DESIGN.
