Summary

Post experience analysis of accidents is essential for hazard prevention. In France, refrigeration plants are responsible for 50 to 70% of accidents due to ammonia. They occur particularly in August. Their geographical location is indicated together with the nature of the occurrence. A classification of accidents is given in % age terms and their consequences are mentioned (death, injuries, pollution). The circumstances of accidents are detailed: maintenance operations, plant modifications, overpressure, load transfer. The nature and cause of the main failures (50% of the accidents) are given: equipment and human failure. Ammonia leaks during accidents are classified as follows: less than 100 kg (47%), from 100 to 500 kg (29%), from 1 to 3 t (11%), more than 3 t (8%). J.L.
