Upgrade of the compressor system of the HERA cryogenic plant by the use of frequency converter power supplies.

Author(s) : HERZOG H., KLOS R., LIERL H., et al.

Summary

A total of 14 slide valve controlled screw compressors operating in a low and high pressure stage are used for the three refrigerators of the HERA cryogenic plant, at the DESY laboratory in Hamburg, Germany. In order to increase the volumetric flow capacity of the seven low stage Joule-Thomson flow compressors, we introduced a frequency controlled power supply system which replaced the slide valve control of the compressors and which allowed a 60 instead of 50 Hz operation, i.e. a 20% increase of the rotational speed. The layout, the new electrical installations, the control and the operating experience are described.
