Summary

Compared to mechanical compression chillers, absorption chillers allow drastic reduction of the power consumption thanks to the use of thermal energy (for example, solar or fatal energy). The most frequent binary mixtures encountered as Refrigerant/Absorbent are Water/Lithium bromide and Ammonia/Water. But both of them exhibit major drawbacks: negative temperatures are not reachable in the first case while in the second, toxicity of ammonia has to be considered in addition to high pressure issues. Thus, in this contribution, we consider hydrocarbons as valuable substitution mixtures. The study focusses on an absorption chiller producing 17.5 kW cold at 2°C close to an air conditioner system. A sensitivity analysis is performed in order to better understand the device operation. It is also shown that this mixture makes it possible to reach very low temperatures.
