Summary

THE AUTHORS HAVE ANALYZED THE POSSIBILITY OF USING EMPTY VENTI LATED SPACES (FALSE FLOORS OR FALSE CEILINGS) FOR RECOVERING THE EXHAUST AIR OF AN AIR CONDITIONING UNIT, OPERATING DURING SUMMER. A CALCULATION PROGRAM WAS DEVELOPED, BASED ON THE FINITE DIFFERENCE METHOD AND ASSUMING UNSTEADY THERMAL CONDITIONS AND A ONE-DIMENSIONAL HEAT FLUX. THE RESULTS SHOW THE CONSIDERABLE INFLUENCE OF THE AIR FLOW RATE IN THE EMPTY SPACES ON THE THERMAL LOADS OF THE ROOM. THESE EFFECTS DEPEND ON THE POSITION OF THE EMPTY SPACE WITH RESPECT TO THE STRUCTURAL LAYERS HAVING THERMAL CAPACITY AS WELL AS ON THE THERMOPHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SURFACES ENCLOSING THE SPACE.
