Vacuum insulation panels based on silicas: a powerful concept for heat insulation of super efficient refrigerators and freezers.

Type of article: Periodical article

Summary

Vacuum insulation panels contain a board of compressed precipitated silica in a fleece bag and an envelope of barrier films laminated with aluminium and under a vacuum. They can be included within normally foam insulated panels to reduce heat leakage by up to 30% and can be applied to domestic refrigerators and freezers or other panelled constructions. The silica powder has a pore volume of 93% after compression yet shape is maintained during handling and storage. Life expectancy in use is up to 20 years at temperatures ranging from -40 to 60 deg C. The components have no ecological or toxic effects. The data sheet gives further details including thermal conductivity. D.W.H.
