Examines the functions which operating theatre air conditioning installations have to fulfil and notes that these functions, in particular the maintenance of hygiene, are most affected if the supply air fan breaks down. Notes the possible causes of breakdown of operation of the fan. Examines the increase in operating theatre temperature and air humidity, concentrations of anaesthetic gas and air-borne bacteria. Describes steps to be taken in the event of breakdown during an operation.
