Activities of the IIR’s Commission E2 “Heat Pumps, Energy Recovery”
Presentation of IIR Commission E2 activities by Per Lundqvist, President of Commission E2
It is clear that heat pumps have a unique role in the energy system of the future. No other technology can provide net primary energy savings, economic benefits to users and reduced climate impact at the same time.
There are however numerous research challenges for efficient and environmentally benign heat pumps systems that most future energy scenarios count on. The systems have to be highly efficient, reliable and cost effective, maybe also smart and connected. It is our job as researchers in industry or academia to meet those challenges but, in order to do so, we need to make the future role of heat pumps more visible to make sufficient funding available for the challenge.
The IIR’s Commission E2, which includes 55 experts from 24 IIR member countries on all continents, is very active and participates in many IIR activities aimed at promoting knowledge of heat pump technology and its applications worldwide.
. Since the last IIR International Congress of Refrigeration in August 2011, Commission E2 has participated in 6 IIR conferences and 13 IIR-co-sponsored conferences.
One of the latest ones was the very successful 11th IIR-Gustav Lorentzen Conference on Natural Refrigerants which took place in Hangzhou, China, from 31 August to 2 September 2014. 30 out of the 135 papers presented during this event dealt with heat pumps.
A joint Commissions B1-B2-E1-E2 business meeting was organized during this conference allowing commission members to review ongoing projects.
The 127 papers presented during the IIR-co-sponsored International Sorption Heat Pump Conference (ISHPC2014), held in College Park, Maryland, USA, from 31 March to 3 April 2014, attest to the sturdiness of research in sorption heat pumping technology.
. Upcoming IIR events involving Commission E2 include, naturally the 24th IIR International Congress of Refrigeration (ICR2015), from 16 to 22 August 2015 in Yokohama, Japan. Abstracts of 136 papers related to heat pumps and energy recovery have been accepted. The following one will be the 12th IIR-Gustav Lorentzen Conference on Natural Refrigerants - GL2016 – which will be held in Edinburgh, United Kingdom.
. Commission E2 is also involved in 3 IIR Working Parties. The Working Parties “Mitigation of Direct Emissions of Greenhouse Gases in Refrigeration” (chaired by myself) and “Refrigerant-Charge Reduction in Refrigerating Systems” (chaired by José Miguel Corberan) completed their work a few months ago; they were very active as illustrated by the publication of one Informatory Note each and the organization of several workshops. These 24th and 25th IIR Informatory Notes on Refrigeration Technologies can be consulted here: http://goo.gl/WdQiOv
The working party “LCCP Evaluation” (Yunho Hwang) will organize its 7th workshop during ICR2015 and is preparing publications.
Commission B2 members also participated in several special issues of the International Journal of Refrigeration, including ones on “Refrigeration and Heat Pumping with Sorption Processes” in May 2012 and on “Solar cooling” in March 2014.
The Commission “Heat Pumps, Energy Recovery” is at the heart of current international, regional and national discussions and decisions on climate change. Its role is of great importance since the IIR must give to all decision makers an independent, science and technology-based and constantly updated information.
