Highlights: IIR Cold Chain Conference 2020 Welcomed Over 140 Participants

Offering both on site and online access, the 6th IIR Cold Chain conference was the first ever hybrid IIR conference!

Conjointly hosted by the Nantes-Atlantic National College of Veterinary Medicine, Food Science and Engineering (Oniris) and the French Association of Refrigeration (AFF), the 6th IIR Conference on Sustainability and the Cold Chain (ICCC 2020) took place on August 26-28, 2020.

Understanding that it is even more critical today to provide visibility to the work of refrigeration specialists in light of the current context, the IIR conference was maintained, but adapted.

For the very first time, an IIR conference was held both online and on site, providing essential access across the globe to participants unable to travel due to national restrictions.

The three-day conference programme offered four keynote presentations, 69 technical sessions and four workshops, and attracted delegates from 25 nations from both developing and developed countries.

The keynotes were delivered by:

  • Noboru Kagawa (President of the JSRAE) - New Technologies for Global Cold Chain of Japan
  • Jacques Guilpart (MF Conseil) - A methodology to assess the carbon footprint of food cold chain in western Europe
  • Tom Ståle Nordtvedt (SINTEF) - Seafood refrigeration processing
  • Ina Colombo, Catarina Marques (IIR Working Group CaRe - Careers in Refrigeration) - Women in the Refrigeration, Air-Conditioning and the Heat Pump Industry

Recognising the notoriety of the event, 17 sponsors maintained their support of the conference as did the French Ministry of Ecology, with representative Mr. Benoit Lebot providing an overview of the international efforts to encourage a climate friendly cooling sector around the globe; From the G7 to the G20.

ICCC 2020 brought together an international audience of researchers and industrialists to highlight:

  • Food quality and food safety
  • Modeling and prediction tools for optimizing the cold chain
  • Refrigeration and health
  • Energy efficiency in the cold chain
  • Innovation in eco-design of equipment.

The conference papers will soon be available to download from the IIR FRIDOC database.

Many thanks to the organisers of this conference, Oniris and the AFF, who, despite the international context, were able to organise an innovative and well structured event!
