Mid-Term Conference of the BETTED Project at FOOD 4 FUTURE 2025

At the FOOD 4 FUTURE event in Bilbao, the BETTED project consortium emphasised the importance of energy efficiency in the sustainable transformation of the dairy sector and held its mid-term meeting.

On May 15, during the FOOD 4 FUTURE – EXPO FOODTECH in Bilbao, Spain, the BETTED project consortium hosted a dedicated session titled “Energy Efficiency in the Dairy Sector: Innovation and Technology.” This targeted session stood out within the FOOD4FUTURE agenda as a key moment to address real-world strategies for improving energy efficiency in the dairy sector.

The session, moderated by Concha Ávila from FIAB, provided valuable insights into how innovation can reduce environmental impact across the dairy value chain.

Topics presented by partners included:

  • Eduardo Cotillas (FIAB, Food for Life–Spain) setting the context on why energy efficiency is vital for competitiveness and sustainability.
  • Simone Zanoni (University of Brescia) presenting the BETTED project’s vision for transforming the sector.
  • Christina Kachacha (IEECC) highlighting regulatory and strategic pathways toward decarbonisation.
  • Paola Maio (EHPA) demonstrating the role of heat pump technologies in cutting emissions.
  • Beatrice Marchi (University of Brescia) unveiling the Energy Transition Toolbox, a practical package of tools supported by a tutorial video available here: Watch the video.
  • María Luisa Fernandez (COVAP) sharing how renewables can reshape dairy energy use.
  • Anna Pacak (IIR) outlining solutions for building efficient cold supply chains within the sector.

In the afternoon, project partners gathered for the Mid-Term Meeting, held in a hybrid format. On-site and remote participants engaged in lively discussions, sharing progress updates, aligning strategies, and defining the next steps for each work package.

The International Institute of Refrigeration is pleased to be part of this ambitious and forward-looking initiative. We thank all contributors and attendees for their commitment to advancing sustainable solutions in the dairy sector and look forward to continuing this journey together as the BETTED project enters its next phase.
