New F-Gas rules in effect

The European Commission recently introduced new F-gas rules about labelling, the format for data declaration, and certification.

In September 2024, the European Commission published 3 new rules about F-Gas:

  • Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2174) [1] on the labelling of products containing fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases), published on September 2. These rules, effective January 1, 2025, aim to improve the visibility, readability, and durability of labels to better monitor and reduce emissions. Labels must include essential information, such as the presence and amount of F-gases, along with CO2 equivalent emissions. Additional labels are required for products containing recycled or reclaimed F-gases. Special provisions apply to medical devices and banned products, which must carry specific warnings.
  • Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2195 [2] (September 4, 2024), which determines the format for data declarations under Article 26 of Regulation (EU) 2024/573. This regulation, which replaces the previous Implementing Regulation (EU) No 1191/2014, came into effect on September 26, 2024, with immediate application.
  • Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2215 [3] (September 6, 2024), which sets minimum certification requirements for individuals and entities working with equipment containing F-gases, such as refrigeration and air conditioning systems. This regulation also addresses refrigeration units in vehicles and containers and entered into force on September 29, 2024.

Together, these regulations aim to enhance transparency, support compliance, and contribute to the EU’s broader climate goals by ensuring proper handling and labelling of F-gases.
