The 5th IIR Conference on Sustainability and the Cold Chain

welcomed nearly 200 participants

Hosted by the Chinese Association of Refrigeration (CAR) and attracting nearly 200 experts, professionals and students from 15 different countries worldwide, the 5th IIR Conference on Sustainability and the Cold Chain (ICCC 2018) took place on 6-8 April 2018 in Beijing, China.

The conference opened with a warm welcome speech from the conference chair, Vice-President of IIR Section B2 Mr Ruzhu Wang, followed by speeches from Mr Meng Qingguo, Vice-President and Secretary General of the CAR, and Mr Didier Coulomb, Director General of the IIR.

73 papers, 5 keynotes and a lot of interaction!

The 3-day conference offered a full programme of dynamic exchanges with a total of 73 high quality papers, five keynote presentations, four workshops, numerous networking sessions and several IIR Commission and IIR Working Group meetings.

Delivered by several international experts, the five keynote presentations gave insights into, for example, the “The paradigm between food preservation, refrigerant use and energy consumption” (Mr Jacques Guilpart, IIR France Delegate and President of IIR Section C) or the “State-of-the-art of cold chain equipment in China” (Prof. Changqing Tian, Professor and Co-director of the Chinese Academy of Sciences).

The 73 conference papers include:

  • The use of ejectors technology how to boost efficiency in warm climates: a real example from Italy
  • Modelling of liquid air energy storage applied to refrigerated cold stores
  • Low GWP refrigerant options and their LCCP impact for transport refrigeration products

IIR commissions D1 (Refrigerated storage), D2 (Refrigerated transport) and C2 (Food science and engineering) took the opportunity to reunite their members and interested parties, as did IIR Working Groups on Careers in Refrigeration (CaRe), the Cold Chain for Pharmaceutical Products and the Cold Chain in Hot Countries.

With a focus on cryogenic energy storage for renewable, led by the EU project CryoHub, the supermarket as a whole with EU project SuperSmart, or even how to reap the benefits of social media in the refrigeration sector, there was a workshop for everyone.

The IIR would like to thank the Chinese Association of Refrigeration as well as all those who participated in making ICCC 2018 a success.
