Restoration plans approved for Grimsby ice factory

In the UK, local council has approved plans to turn the derelict Grimsby Ice Factory into a multipurpose venue, while preserving the historical compressor room.

The North East Lincolnshire Council in the UK has approved the plans to restore, alter and convert the Grimsby Ice Factory, to provide offices, research and development space, and a conference and live event venue with 1,000 capacity. The project is expected to create 600 jobs locally. [1]

The former ice factory of Grimsby was built in 1901 and is a sole surviving example of an ice-making factory of its kind. At its peak, it produced 1100 tonnes of ice per day and helped to make Grimsby the largest fishing port in the world.

According to the planning officers’ report, the historic ice compressor room will be retained, along with a full representative example of the ice making process.
