Résumé

Notes that apple juice and cider have to be kept cool at a temperature of eight degrees. Describes a cider plant in Frankfurt where rain water is used for cooling. The rain water is collected from a flat roof covered with plants (green roof), stored in an underground tank, pumped to a chiller (summer) and drawn around the cider tanks to cool them before being pumped back on to the roof. In summer the evaporation of this water from the plants creates a significant cooling effect for the building. Compares the costs of the rainwater system with those for cooling towers over 10 years, showing a saving of 60,000 DEM. Calculates the amount of drinking water saved during 1994-96 at 1075 m3. States in an optimum year the savings can be 15,000 m3.
