Tomato fruits were coated with Semperfresh edible fruit coating. Coated and uncoated fruits were stored at 23 plus or minus 2 °C in air, at 12 °C in air, or stored at 12 °C, 93-95% RH in a controlled atmosphere containing 3% CO2, 3% O2 and 94% N2 for up to 40 days. Samples were analysed. Semperfresh edible fruit coating significantly delayed changes in firmness, titratable acidity, pH, soluble solids, sugars, ascorbic acid and lycopene at both storage temperatures in air. Semperfresh fruit coating reduced fruit weight loss compared with the control, but the difference between coated and uncoated fruits was not significant. The shelf life increased by 3 days at 23 plus or minus 2 °C and by 6 days at 12 °C in air by coating. CA storage significantly delayed compositional changes in tomatoes compared with air storage. CA storage also had a significant potential for reducing weight loss and microbial spoilage. Fruits could be stored for 40 days in CA. Coated and uncoated fruits exhibited the same results in CA.
