Résumé

Active packages can be defined as a type of packaging which emits into or scavenges from a package's atmosphere different compounds in order to extend the shelf life of products. The active packages concerned are those which absorb oxygen, ethylene, moisture, carbon dioxide, flavours, odours, and those which release carbon dioxide, antimicrobial agents, antioxidants and flavours. Compounds responsible for such actions can be incorporated in packaging materials or in the form of sachets. Active packaging is widespread in the USA, Japan, and Australia. In Europe, application of such systems is still limited because of legislative restrictions.
