29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29)

The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the UNFCCC will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024. This summit will gather world leaders, climate scientists, business leaders, and civil society representatives to discuss critical climate challenges and propose actionable solutions.

The conference is an opportunity to reinforce the commitments made at previous COPs and accelerate the transition to a sustainable future. In Baku, key priorities will include building momentum for raising ambition in the 2025 NDC updates (NDC 3.0), accelerating climate adaptation (National Adaptation Plans), and more ambitious, transparent, and predictable climate finance target for vulnerable nations, including loss and damage.

On November 14, Marco Duran, Head of International Policies and Partnerships at the IIR, will be taking part in the side event titled "Cooling the Heat: Enhancing Energy Efficiency in the Refrigeration and Cooling Sector", organised by the Ozone Secretariat, UNDP and partners.

Marco Duran will provide insights into the critical role that cooling and heating play in addressing climate challenges, with a focus on energy efficiency and the commitments outlined in the Global Cooling Pledge.

The event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Side-Event Room 5.

On 15 November 2024, the IIR will be hosting a side event jointly with the Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE), CLASP and Sustainable Energy for All (SEforAll) focused on Global South energy efficiency tracking as a crucial component of climate action.

The event will open with context-setting remarks by IIR Director General Yosr Allouche, followed by a panel discussion covering best practices, effective frameworks, and innovative financial tools designed to boost energy efficiency adoption. Regional case studies and collaborative frameworks from Southeast Asia and other developing regions will be highlighted, showcasing successful approaches to scaling efficiency.

This event aims to highlight the critical role of energy efficiency tracking in achieving climate goals and establish a long-term engagement framework to support ongoing energy efficiency advancements and public-private partnerships beyond COP29, contributing to more resilient climate strategies worldwide.

We warmly invite all COP29 delegations to join us for this pivotal side event from 16:45 to 18:15 in Side-Event Room 5, Area B, to explore collaborative strategies and innovative solutions for advancing global energy efficiency in climate action.

Stay tuned for regular updates on COP 29!
