65 K two-stage mixed refrigerant/O2 throttle cycle refrigerator.

Summary

Cascade refrigerators using sorption compressors have been proposed for use in space because they have no active components and should thus have long life. A two circuit cryostat was built which assumed thermal cycling of a chemisorption adsorber system to compress O2, from 2 to 300 kilopascals in one circuit and used a mixed refrigerant in the other circuit to condense the O2 at 100 K prior to expanding it to 65 K. The refrigerator that was built removes about 2.5 watts of heat from the O2 at 100 K to provide 2 watts of cooling at 65 K.
