Summary

A SOLAR POWERED 7 KW (2 TON) WATER / LITHIUM BROMIDE ABSORPTION AIR-CONDITIONING SYSTEM HAS OPERATED RELIABLY DURING ITS FIRST COOLING SEASON. IN A FOUR WEEK MEASURING PERIOD, THE SOLAR CONTRIBUTION WAS VERY NEARLY 70% OF TOTAL ENERGY NEEDED FOR THE SYSTEM. IN HOT HUMID CLIMATES IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO REACH THE CHILLER DESIGN COEFFICIENT OF PERFORMANCE OF 0.6 AND CAPACITY REDUCTIONS HAVE TO BE TOLERATED. THE SYSTEM COMPONENT OF CONCERN IS THE HOT WATER STORAGE TANK. MASSIVE INSULATION HAS TO BE USED TO KEEP LOSSES WITHIN ACCEPTABLE LIMITS. COLD STORAGE IS NOT SUGGESTED BECAUSE A HIGH PRICE IS BEING PAID FOR THE LITTLE ADVANTAGES THEY OFFER. IF USED FOR COOLING PURPOSES ONLY, A SOLAR POWERED ABSORPTION CHILLER IS HARDLY AN ALTERNATIVE TO A VAPOUR COMPRESSION CYCLE BECAUSE, IF NOT 100% FIRED BY SOLAR, IT REQUIRES MORE CONVENTIONAL ENERGY INPUT THAN THE VAPOUR COMPRESSION CYCLE. PRIMARY ENERGY INPUT ANALYSES SHOW THAT ON AN ALL-ING, ESPECIALLY IF THEY CAN BE OPERATED AS A HEAT PUMP IN WINTER (AMMONIA / WATER SYSTEM).
