A HEAT EXCHANGER TEST FACILITY FOR MINE AIR COOLERS.

Summary

THE INSTALLED REFRIGERATION CAPACITY ON THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOLD MINES IS APPROACHING 1,000MW, AND APPROXIMATELY TWO-THIRDS IS DISTRIBUTED THROUGH WATER-TO-AIR HEAT EXCHANGERS, WHICH REPRESENT A CONSIDERABLE INVESTMENT. AN ESSENTIAL STAGE IN THE DEVELOPMENT WORK IS THE MEASUREMENT OF PERFORMANCE DATA UNDER TYPICAL OPERATING TEMPERATURES AND FLOW CONDITIONS. A HEAT EXCHANGER TEST CENTRE HAS BEEN BUILT WHERE THE PERFORMANCE OF PROTOTYPE AIR COOLERS CAN BE MEASURED UNDER SIMILAR TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS TO THOSE ENCOUNTERED UNDERGROUND. THE DESIGN OF THIS FACILITY IS DESCRIBED.
