OPTIMUM USE OF CHILLED SERVICE WATER IN ULTRA DEEP MINES.
Author(s) : RAMSDEN R., BAKER-DULY C.
Summary
CHILLED WATER IS ALLOWED TO FLOW OVER ROCK SURFACES WHERE IT PICKS UP HEAT THROUGH HEAT TRANSFER WITH THE ROCK SURFACES AND THE HOT AMBIENT AIR AND NORMALLY LEAVES THE STOPE AT APPROXIMATELY THE WET-BULB TEMPERATURE OF THE INLET AIR. IN FUTURE DEEP MINES, NEW TECHNOLOGIES SUCH AS HYDRO-POWER WILL PROBABLY BE USED WHICH, BECAUSE OFTHE HIGHER FACE ADVANCES AND THE LARGER PEAK FLOWS, CAN RESULT IN LARGE QUANTITIES OF WATER RUNNING DOWN THE FOOTWALL AT CERTAIN TIMES DURING THE MINING CYCLE. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE HEAT TRANSFER BETWEEN THE CHILLED WATER, ROCK AND VENTILATION AIR IS EXAMINED. IT IS SHOWN THAT TO MAKE GREATER USE OF THE COOLING POTENTIAL OF THE CHILLED SERVICE WATER IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO PASS IT THROUGH AIR COOLERS PRIOR TO USING IT IN STOPES.
