AN ALGORITHM IS DEVELOPED FOR THE OPTIMAL SYNTHESIS OF HEAT EXCHANGER SYSTEMS WITH A GIVEN SEQUENCE FOR COUPLING/MATCHING OF ORDERED HOT AND COLD STREAMS IN THE HEAT EXCHANGE EQUIPMENT. METHODS FOR COMPUTING THE TEMPERATURES OF PORTIONS OF THOSE HOT AND COLD STREAMS NOT ACHIEVING REQUIRED INITIAL OR FINAL VALUES, AS WELL AS GUIDELINES FOR SELECTION OF ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS IN CASES WHERE THESE FAILURES ARISE, ARE INCLUDED. IT IS ASSUMED THAT THE ORIGINAL HOT AND COLD STREAMS ARE ARRANGED INITIALLY IN DECREASING ORDER OF THEIR INITIAL AND FINAL TEMPERATURES, RESPECTIVELY.
