Summary

A NUMERICAL METHOD TO DETERMINE THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF A HOMOGENEOUS MATERIAL FROM MEASURED TEMPERATURE PROFILES IS PRESENTED. THE PROBLEM IS FORMULATED AS AN OPTIMIZATION PROBLEM WHERE THE HEAT EQUATION APPEARS AS A CONSTRAINT. THIS OPTIMIZATION PROBLEM IS SOLVED WITH THE DAVIDON-FLETCHER-POWELL METHOD AND IN EACH ITERATION THE HEAT EQUATION IS SOLVED BY FINITE ELEMENT TECHNIQUES WITH THE PREDICTOR-CORRECTOR METHOD.
