Summary

The ATP agreement stipulates a detailed procedure for measuring the overall K-value of insulated transport equipment. The overall K-value is the joint effect of all segments of the insulated body. Sometimes the measured overall K-value is higher than anticipated. Then the question arises: which parts of the insulated body cause the elevated K-value? Then there is a need for a method to measure the K-value of smaller sections of the insulated body. This paper presents a method to measure the K-value of individual sections of the insulated body and even individual panel segments. The effectivity of the method is demonstrated by application to a real item of transport equipment. It is concluded that the approach, though laborious and time-consuming, can be used successfully to unravel the overall K-value and trace back the contributions of individual elements of the insulated body.
