Method for measuring the thickness of the walls of isothermal cells.

Summary

The insulation performance of isothermal bodies for temperature-controlled transport equipment is characterized by their overall thermal insulation coefficient, known as K-value, and is generally measured according to ATP methods. The K coefficient of a body depends on the design and method of construction of the body, the nature of the insulation, the panel components, and the elements or accessories making up the body. The thickness of the insulation and the thickness of the panels play then a major role in determining the K-value. If a temperature-controlled transport vehicle is to be considered as having the same insulation performance as a reference vehicle, it is essential to ensure that its dimensions, and above all the thickness of the panels of its body are comparable. Slight variations in panel thickness can have a major impact on insulation performance. Wall thickness is usually measured by comparing the internal and external dimensions of the equipment, but this method is not always sufficiently accurate. This article compares the lendth difference measurement method with a
direct measurement method by drilling. The authors compare the two methods on panels and then on reference equipment and propose an analysis of the impact of these measurements on laboratory test results. Finally, they show the impact of improved thickness measurement on the determination of the energy and environmental performance of refrigerated transport equipment.
