A new LNG import terminal for Italy.
Author(s) : FASSIO F., TOGNOLI G., CORSINI C.
Summary
Italy is a net importer of natural gas, with imports forecasted to grow (2000-2010) by approx. 18-25 bcma. Italy's gas imports rely heavily on Algeria and Russia (around 70% of total import) in addition to The Netherlands, Norway and Nigeria. Italy has only one 3.5 bcma LNG terminal (operated by Eni) near Genoa. A planned new pipeline from Libya (6 mtpa-Eni) will help diversifying supply sources, but will not significantly increase market competition, or security of supply. BG applied for authority to construct and operate an 8 bcma LNG import and regasification terminal at Brindisi (BLNG) in December 2001. The project was in the list of infrastructure priorities both for Italian Government and EU authorities. Construction and operation of BLNG was authorised just over a year later in January 2003. This terminal is to be sited within the outer harbour of Brindisi Port. It will have a berth for 140 000 m3 LNG carriers, initially 2 x 160 000 m3 concrete LNG storage tanks (with room for two more) and LNG vaporisation plant utilising heat from sea water. LNG will partially come from Egypt and may come from other Mediterranean or middle-eastern sources. BG and Enel recently became 50% partners in BLNG.
