A new refrigerating system for the containerized transport of perishables.

Author(s) : BRUINSMA M. H., BONTE A.

Summary

Sea transport of perishables is characterized by an ever increasing demand for speed, both at sea and in port. Turn-around times in port have been reduced by a shift from break bulk cargo to containerized cargo. The latest development is the transport of perishables on flatrack containers, with cold air blown under the pallets. This solution makes short loading and discharging times possible, as with a container, without incurring the high investment required for reefer containers. A new air distribution system has been developed to ensure a short cooling down time, similar to that of break bulk or palletized cargo. Measurements on board the first vessel equipped with this system confirm the predicted temperature curve.
