Summary
The restrictions imposed by the F-Gas directive have greatly increased the price of the HFC refrigerants during the last years. Then, the interest in natural refrigerants like carbon dioxide, propane or ammonia is arising as an alternative to the synthetic options. One of the key factors to safely implement solutions with flammable or toxic refrigerants like ammonia is the reduction of the refrigerant charge. Thus, researchers and manufacturers are making enormous efforts to achieve the minimum possible ammonia charge.
This article reports the experimental analysis of a novel concept of a compact ammonia chiller with a much reduced refrigerant charge. An air condensed unit with a semi-hermetic screw compressor and dry expansion plate heat exchanger in the evaporator side is proposed. Contrary to what has been commonly used in most of the industrial units, a miscible oil solution has been chosen as a lubrication system together with a single stage oil separator in the discharge of the compressor.
Considering all the features of the unit and a careful design of the piping, a value of the ammonia specific charge of 65 g/kW have been achieved with a COP of 2.0 for a nominal capacity of 220 kW at -8ºC of glycol supply. The results have proven that an efficient ammonia system with a much reduced specific refrigerant charge can be built and safely operated..
