Summary

A new method is suggested to estimate the average heat transfer coefficients in the entry region of a short length of tube under developing laminar flow conditions. The method, although it appears to be unconventional, makes use of the concept that the turbulent mixing length theory can be extrapolated down to the laminar region with the universal constant K in the eddy diffusivity expression to be dependent on L/D and Reynolds number. However, in the estimation of the mean heat transfer coefficients in the entry region, the friction coefficients data must be known prior. Comparison of the present theory with the correlations of Hausen and Seider and Tate related to entry region analysis revealed satisfactory agreement substantiating the validity of the approach.
