A performance based standard for legionella control in cooling water systems.

Author(s) : BROADBENT C. R.

Summary

Practical engineering control measures introduced include attention to design features to minimise bacterial growth niches. Health authorities also introduced regulations and guidelines to encourage owners to establish and maintain hygienic conditions in these and other systems. A recent (1998) innovation was the preparation of a national performance-based regulatory standard whose aim is to allow alternative strategies which may not necessitate system shutdown for regular cleaning yet provide for an equivalent level of system hygiene. The standard is described in the paper.
