Summary
A reversed Brayton cycle, referred to here as Brayton Cooling System (CSB) for multi-slab laser amplifier (MLA) cooling of the L2 DUHA laser was successfully put into full operation during years 2023 and 2024. This CSB is installed in a laser laboratory under cleanroom conditions at the ELI facility in Dolni Brezany, Czech Republic. The required operating temperature of the laser amplifier crystals is 120 K or lower with a cooling power 2 kW. The CSB follows up on a previous CSB system with a lower cooling power 300 W. The new CSB (CSB II ELI) requires significantly higher power and has been redesigned for optimal cooling of the laser head. In this work, the strict requirements of the laser amplifier cooling technology are described. Simultaneously, a summary of the CSB arrangement, the main components and basic operation characteristics are provided. Theoretically expected parameters are compared and discussed with measured data. The second part of article focuses on the comparison between used CSB technology and a possible alternative based on LN2 as a source of cold. an assumed arrangement of LN2 technology together with its base characteristic is presented. A final comparison is made regarding operation risks, fulfilment of cooling requirements – achieved temperature level, temperature and flow rate stability, system dynamics together with transient states control, etc. Beside process characteristics, differences between CAPEX and OPEX for both systems are discussed. Finally, the possibility of further future improvement of the CSB technology is presented.
