A REVIEW ON STABILITY EXPERIMENTS WITH SUPERCONDUCTORS IN LIQUID HELIUM UNDER POOL BOILING CONDITION.

Author(s) : TUROWSKI P.

Summary

THE RESULTS OF MANY EXPERIMENTS ARE COMPARABLE AT THE THRESHOLD OF RECOVERY ON THE BASIS OF THE EFFECTIVE HEAT FLOW RATE. THEY ARE HIGHER THAN EXPECTED AND CAN STILL BE IMPROVED BY A SPECIAL SURFACE TREATMENT. INHOMOGENEITIES OF INTRINSIC PROPERTIES ALONG A SUPERCONDUCTOR OR IN COOLING PERFORMANCE WILL DETERMINE THE LIMITS OF RECOVERY CURRENT, WHICH UNDER POOL BOILING CONDITIONS IS DOMINATED BY THE EXCITATION OF A CONVECTION FLOW. THE HIGHER CURRENT LEVELS LEAD TO SHORTER RECOVERY TIMES AND THE TRANSIENT HEAT TRANSFER GAINS IN INFLUENCE. IN MORE COMPLEX CONDUCTORS THE INTRINSIC INHOMOGENEITIES MAY PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE FOR THE STABLE BEHAVIOUR.
