Summary

A semi-empirical model is proposed to describe the falling film absorption process taking place outside different kinds of horizontal tubes. The model consists of two empirical parameters: the effective area coefficient and the enhancement factor of mass diffusivity. The values of the two parameters are determined experimentally for the smooth tube and two kinds of spiral grooved tubes. Experimental results indicate these two parameters are esentially functions of the Reynolds number only for a fixed tube. Two different mechanisms of the heat and mass transfer enhancement in the falling film absorption by the spiral grooved tubes are explained.
