Summary

THE MAGNETIZATION OF POLYCRYSTALLINE METALLIC EUROPIUM HAS BEEN MEASURED IN THE TEMPERATURE RANGE 4.2 TO 270 K AND IN MAGNETIC FIELDS UP TO 30 KILOOERSTEDS. IT IS SHOWN THAT THE EXCESS MAGNETIZATION, WHICH IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE LOW-TEMPERATURE QUASI-FERROMAGNETIC BEHAVIOUR OF THIS METAL, IS DUE TO GAS IMPURITIES AND, MOST LIKELY, TO HYDROGEN. THE VACUUM FUSING METHOD HAS BEEN USED FOR DETERMINATION OF THE HYDROGEN CONCENTRATIONS IN TWO EUROPIUM SAMPLES.
