Summary

A METHOD IS DESCRIBED FOR COOLING GASEOUS ATOMS, WHICH USES A LASER FOR SLOWING THE THERMAL DISTURBANCE OF ATOMS AND, HENCE, WHICH COOLS THEM DOWN TO A TEMPERATURE OF ABOUT ONE MILLIONTH DEGREE KELVIN. MOREOVER, THEATOMS ARE TRAPPED IN A SMALL AREA OF SPACE BY MEAN OF A MAGNETIC FIELD. THE MAGNETO-OPTICAL TRAP DESCRIBED IS ADAPTED TO THE TRAPPING OF THE ATOMS OF CAESIUM VAPOUR, WHICH IS CONFINED AT AMBIENT TEMPERATURE IN A GLASS CELL, AND MAKES IT POSSIBLE, THROUGH A SUCCESSION OF TRAPPINGS AND CONFINEMENTS, TO REACH 1.1 MICROKELVIN. HOW FAR WILL THE RACE TOWARDS ABSOLUTE ZERO GO.
