Summary

THE EFFECT OF AN EXTERNAL MAGNETIC FIELD ON THE TRAPPING OF 29 CM-1 ACOUSTIC PHONONS MULTIPLY SCATTERED ON THE E-2A ELECTRON TRANSITIONS IN THE METASTABLE STATE OF THE CHROMIUM IONS IN RUBY IS INVESTIGATED IN DETAIL AT 1.8 K. AN ANOMALOUS NONMONOTONOUS DEPENDENCE OF THE DEGREE OF TRAPPING ON H IS OBSERVED. A THEORY OF MULTIPLE COMBINATION SCATTERING OF PHONONS IN A MAGNETIC FIELD IS DEVELOPED. BY COMPARING THE THEORY AND EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS THE PROBABILITIES FOR E-2A TRANSITIONS INVOLVING OR NOT INVOLVING SPIN FLIP ARE DETERMINED.
