A VARIATIONAL PRINCIPLE FOR HEAT AND MASS EXCHANGER DESIGN: THE EQUIPARTITION OF ENTROPY SOURCES.

UN PRINCIPE VARIATIONNEL POUR LA CONCEPTION DES ECHANGEURS DE CHALEUR ET DE MATIERE : L'EQUIPARTITION DES SOURCES D'ENTROPIE.

Type of article: Article

Summary

THE ARTICLE IS BASED ON THE IDEA THAT HEAT-OR MASS EXCHANGERS ARE ALL THE LESS DISSIPATIVE (IN THE SENSE OF ENTROPY PRODUCTION) AND ALL THE MORE ECONOMICAL, AS THE ENTROPY PRODUCTION IS DISTRIBUTED MORE UNIFORMLY (EQUIPARTITION) THROUGHOUT THE EXCHANGE PROCESS. THIS PROPERTY IS FIRST ILLUSTRATED QUALITATIVELY WITH THE CASE OF CO-CURRENT AND COUNTER-CURRENT SIMPLE TUBULAR EXCHANGERS. THEN A DEMONSTRATION OF THIS PROPERTY IS PRESENTED THROUGH A SIMPLE VARIATIONAL CALCULATION, IN THE RESTRICTIVE FRAMEWORK OF LINEAR NON-REVERSIBLE THERMODYNAMICS. THEN SOME EXAMPLES ARE DISCUSSED.
