Summary

The electricity consumption due to building air-conditioning has relevantly increased. As an alternative to conventional air-conditioning systems, thermally driven chillers may be used, as they are suitable for being driven by free thermal energy, for example available from a solar plant. In this paper the performance of a cooling system based on a low-capacity water-cooled LiBr/H2O absorption chiller is studied. Optimization parameters are calculated under different operating conditions (hot water feeding temperature), and compared to the values obtained in case a conventional air-cooled vapour compression chiller was installed in place of the absorption machine. The analysis is performed through a dynamic model of the absorption machine and the other components, implemented on the simulation platform SimSpark. Finally, in the hypothesis of coupling the system to a solar section for hot water production, the minimum collector surface is assessed, which would make the system competitive in comparison with the conventional solution.
