Active and passive cooling techniques for buildings – applicability and preliminary study for evaporative cooling technique

Summary
The application of various active and passive building conditioning approaches is limited by the local climate and resources such as materials, electricity, and water. In the US, materials can be transported over wide distances from domestic and foreign locations. However, while electricity is transportable over substantial distances, the same is not generally true for water. Additionally, many technologies are only applicable to low-rise buildings, and therefore not relevant to high-density urban centers. This paper presents a summary of the requirements for the application of various active and passive cooling technologies. Among other constraints, some techniques require low night-time temperatures, while others require sufficiently low humidity levels. The paper presents a preliminary study of the applicability of direct and indirect evaporative cooling techniques for residential buildings in the US. The dry areas for climate zones between 3 and 6 show the highest potential for direct and indirect cooling considering performance and coverage factors.
