ADVANCED SUPERCONDUCTING POWER TRANSMISSION PROJECTS.

Author(s) : SCHAUER F.

Summary

UP TO NOW TWO PROTOTYPE SUPERCONDUCTING CABLES WERE DEVELOPED: THE FULLY FLEXIBLE CABLE OF ANSTALT FUR TIEFTEMPERATURFORSCHUNG, GRAZ, AUSTRIA, AND A TYPE BUILT BY THE BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORY, NEW YORK, USA, WITH A FLEXIBLE CENTRAL ELECTRICAL SECTION AND A RIGID CRYOGENIC ENVELOPE. SEVERAL SELECTION POSSIBILITIES ARE DISCUSSED. IT IS POSSIBLE TO CHOOSE AMONGST THE VARIOUS COMPONENTS OF THE TWO PROMISING PROTOTYPES AND TO COMBINE THEM WITH IMPROVING TECHNOLOGIES IN ORDER TO BUILD MORE EFFICIENT CABLES ADJUSTABLE TO PARTICULAR GROUND CONDITIONS. THE ACHIEVEMENT OF SUCH CABLES APPEARS TECHNICALLY POSSIBLE AT PRESENT.
