Summary
To get efficient systems, it is necessary to keep temperatures for cooling as high as possible and temperatures required for heating as high as possible. Additionally, the heat sink/heat source temperature should be low in the cooling season and high in the heating season to reduce the temperature lift in the heat pump chiller. Using the ground as heat sink/heat source, these requirements can be achieved. Additionally, the building can be heated by the heat pump chiller only. The temperature for dehumidification is more or less fixed; however, the temperature for removing the cooling load can be significantly higher, again a step towards more efficient systems. Such a solution requires higher first cost; however, running costs can be reduced significantly.
