Summary
A new modular modeling approach of an integrated system for heating, ventilation and air conditioning of buildings is presented. The system comprises a novel single-pipe two-phase carbon dioxide (CO2) loop connected to decentralized local heat pump units. The local heat pumps are connected in series to the loop and exchange heat through the loop regardless of their location in the building and the operation modes. Two-phase (2φ) CO2 circulates inside the loop while it condenses and/or evaporates at a constant temperature. Different components such as a compression-based CO2 circulation system, an outdoor unit, and a CO2 desuperheater are used to circulate 2φ-CO2 and to balance the thermal energy of the loop. The whole system is modeled in TRNSYS software using standard and newly developed “types” to conduct hourly thermal analyses of the system in various configurations. The local heat pumps are modeled based on performance maps, and the CO2 side of the system is modeled based on a combined heat transfer and thermodynamics approach typically used for vapor compression cycles. The model is used to study the control strategies for energy-efficient operating conditions of the system. The performance of the system and its control strategies in heating mode are analyzed through a simulation of an office building and compared to a base case using a water-loop heat pump system. The results of the simulation indicate a decrease in the overall energy consumption and an increase in the Seasonal Performance Factor (SPF) of the CO2 system in heating mode.
